Our newspaper was going to cost money to print and make, we had to look at how much it was and see if we could rase the money so we can pay for the newspaper.

We didn't have £500 to spare, so we looked for advertising, using links we already knew, we came up with enough money to pay for the newspaper

This is how many copies we have currently sold, we still have to sell 240 copies, but people keep contacting us asking for copies and it is being advertised on ORC's teachers list so I'm sure the remaining copies will sell soon.

We have had some feedback from different schools ect which have already bought and used the newspaper for their school

This feedback is showing that the teaches from Islington really like the tube map in the middle of the magazine, and think it will be an interesting piece to use in the classroom. They think there should have been more bigger images for them to use maybe but i think this is positive feedback.

Jenny Grahame, head of Media Magazine said this:

“MediaMe looks great. Works really well with the colour, etc. Mega
achievement.”

Even though the feedback was small, it's positive none the less, saying its a mega achievement, she must of liked it.

I'm not sure what they mean about tv licencing as I think the article clearly states when you do and don't need one, unless this was cut from the revised article.

How Does it meet your original intentions?

I think this newspaper meets our original intentions because it looks like a newspaper, which can be educational which is exactly what we were intending, it helps people with their Media A2 exam, giving them examples and ways to help people pass the exam which has a fun and meaningful twist to the work.

How does it look?

The newspaper looks like a newspaper, with bright colours and eye-catching, most of the text is very clear, except for the word search which is blurry. But other then that i think it looks colourful and very professional.

How pleased are you with your contribution?

I'm quite pleased with my contribution, I wrote an article with Tara, about Online Streaming, so like watching TV online like iplayer ect, I did most of the research and Tara helped me write the article. I also helped with the layout, helping choose colours and format.

How effectively did you work in your role?

I worked within my role quite effectively, as i stuck to my job quite well and got the job done, I was one of the writers so i had to research and write an article, to help for the newspaper, i stuck to this quite well as i did loads of research done with time to spare and totally completed my article way before the deadline was due.

What could be learned from this experience?

I have learned that working to a deadline is crucial, as for this newspaper, if we didn't finish our article in time we will not be able to put it into the final newspaper, and if we are a few articles short we would not be able to make and newspaper therefor we would fail this project. Also if i've learned about the process of a newspaper, so how it starts out with articles to how it's been printed.

What has been learned from previous experiences?

Similar things from this experiance, it has helped me keep to deadlines, aswell as learning several different experiances which has helped e gain knowledge about that specific topic.

We didn't have access to computers during the lesson, so we set about planning a layout for the newspaper, I thought that linking articles would be a good idea as then the paper would not be so random, and have some sort of flow to it, but this was decided against, and i think the layout chosen now is sort of random and doesn't really fit much together, but this was the layout most people wanted, so I just went with it.

Once this was decided I was given my article back subbed for one final work through and finalise of the layout, because Tara was 'busy' I finished all the article and gave it to Nick who approved of it so now that's my article done.

Tuesday 30/03/2010 - Formatting The Article

Today I have started to do more formatting to the article, as the crossheads look a bit squashed into the main body, which people thought that this didn't look that good, so i decided to reformat the crossheads to give it more space.

I then decided to remove the black boarder from the bubbles round the crosshead box's, so it fits into the main header better.

Making the article smaller

Today I got to work on cutting down the article we have been doing, seeing as we have only been given 1 page instead of 2, so I started to cut bits out i found to be a bit wafferly and not informative enough.

Seeing as I don't have pages at home I have struggled a bit to do some of the work otherwise it would of messed up the formatting.

I did try to start putting pictures in the article, but realised thanks to converting a pages document to word, inputting a picture would mess up the formatting of the text and not be very good, so i left this for now.

Tara did the pictures in the end:

The pictures are ok, but i'm not to sure about where they are in the document, I will have to look and see what I can do with the images tomorrow

We hit another problem, I had been chopping down the article a font size smaller then it should be, the fonts for the main body should be Helvitica at size 12, but for some reason it got resized to size 11, which makes some of the works miss off of the page, so I will have to look back over the article again to see what else i have to cut down.

we still need Box outs ect, so i feel we will need to have to cut more down, soon there wont be much of an article left.

In terms of content, this is The Business - Loads of really useful info, which addresses the different exam qs in a very focused and helpful way. But because there's so much dense factual info, you need to think about your layout to make sure things stand out.

- Crossheads for different sections would be really useful - e.g. : The challenges to TV; Legal Issues; New contenders; the future? Preparing for the exam ect (but create your own sexier crossheads)

plus bullet points are often helpful to emphasise points -e.g. in your second paragraph, where there are tons of stats and your final 'Preparing for the exam' section

I thought it would be funny to make a cool logo for the newspaper, its based on a member of my groups initial idea but actually on the computer.

I like it as it says MEdia so it has the name Media Me into one word, which i think works well as a logo needs to be small and snappy which i think this is.

The smiley face was just for my amusement, but i think it looks quite good.

I decided to make it more colourful then the boring traditional paper, as its meant to be a paper for media students so we need to show off our creativity, I personally wouldn't read a media newspaper that was just black and white and dull.

Today we are going to try to get all our style sheet comleted so we can hand that in for people to decide which ones will be the best to use for our paper, we need to research fonts, look at ways to present the text, and maybe start looking for interesting images already present online as a sort of guideline as to what we need to do.

I think also we will be using the Data we collected form the day before and somehow using that information to help us move on with our newspaper and Articles

Today i feel didn't really go as according to plan as I hoped, as the whole style sheet from my group was pretty much just left up to me while others in my group did other things, i hope on this project. But because i was doing it alone i forgot to print out or even make a list of fonts and what size we used of that font, so for tomorrow i need to go back and check what is needed to be presented.

We didn't do any work on the data questionnaires we presented yesterday, so i hope that doesn't just fizzle away,

Today the plan is that I'm hoping to get my article back again to be able to edit it further to be able to improve it to finish it to the deadline next week

I'm hoping we do more on the newspaper as a whole, because we need to get it done to the deadline next Thursday which is the 1st of April

Today didn't go as well as planned, as we didn't do anything at all on the articles as we hadn't had any feedback to be able to carry on further with them

So today was spent going through an article and seeing the format of it, while working out questionnaires to ask people for more information regarding our research

Today i gave the feedback to Mike and Loz, but Loz wasn't in today so he didn't recieve my feedback, but unfortnantly he had feedback from my article also so i didn't get any from him

I was given some feedback from Philippa and Mike, Philippas was in alot greater detail and gave us more ground to carry on with the article

Relate it to one of the questions from january exam. 'This article is particularly helpful for ‘media in the online age’ section of the January past paper, ‘Discuss the extent of which the distribution and consumption of media have been transformed by the internet.’ and ‘The impact of the internet is revolutionary. Discuss.’ on page 9 of the newspaper'

Think about these as key questions:

How has the internet and evolutions in web 2.0 changed the way people interact and show their work, has it made a difference to small scale media pioneers, or people trying to gain a career in media?

(They can now upload videos to YouTube, and these can be seen worldwide, this is different to 10 years ago when the only way to get noticed would be to hold live events or social gatherings.) Think of some more examples for help in the ‘media in the online age’ exam question.

Definite competition from online TV distributors (TV catch up, BBC iplayer) as opposed to watching television at home, will this technical revolution eliminate TV as a necessity in the home? In the future, TV could be watched purely online.

The uncertain future of print journalism if everything is printed online. Are any other media distributors facing the same fate? Could everything eventually be digitalised?

The main question we want to address is:

How are TV streaming websites, such as BBC Iplayer, ITV player and tvcatchup.com changing the way we watch our media? Think about programmes, films etc.

From the use of the internet, media has evolved more than we ever thought it could, one example being able to now watch television at no set date. Online TV program streamers, such as BBC iplayer (here you can watch programs from any channels on the BBC up to a week previously) 40D (same concept, any program from channel 4) and ITVplayer (same concept once again, any program from ITV channels) all allow substantial freedom when it comes to watching television. Youtube is also a big competitor for video streaming, for example the length in time it would take to view all content on YouTube would be 412.3 years (March 2008) Also, Youtube could now be taking away viewers from television even more, ‘YouTube now allows users to upload HD videos and recently launched a service to provide TV shows and movies under license from their copyright holders.’

These TV streaming websites above are providing a challenge to television especially, despite the fact they are not taking the television audience for programs away, they are diverting the audience to an online method of watching the programs; this could create a problem for television in general, perhaps even to the point where a television is no longer necessary because everything can be watched online. A good example of this is as follows. "On the 10th of October 2009 internet history was made, as for the first time an English national World Cup Qualifying game was shown exclusively online. It is interesting for two reasons: firstly that it came about as a result of the collapse of a satellite sports channel (Setanta), and secondly; it shows the shift towards endusers willing to pay premium to watch sports content on their computers".

A strong leader for the online streaming craze is the ever growing popular website called TVcatchup, This was thought up by a group of friends who thought watching TV on the internet would be an interesting compromise. This was three years ago (2007) and since then the site has grown and grown; the latest figures were 758,000 members. In January, 1 million viewers a week streamed a total of 2 petabytes of live TV over TVCatchup. That’s the equivalent of 40 millions four-draw filing cabinets filled with text.

That’s a lot of TV, ‘the equivalent of 26.6 years of HD-TV Video watching.’

Which is showing that how the viewer watches TV is changing forever.

But is this way of watching TV legal? I decided to go onto the TV licensing websites to see the legality of these websites. I have been searching through their website and I have discovered that this form of live web streaming doesn’t not need a TV license if “You’re covered by the homeowner’s TV License if they have one, provided you live in the same building. If you live in self contained accommodation such as a separate flat or annex you need your own separate licence.”

This shows that, providing you have a valid TV license and you live at the address that a valid TV license is present, you are allowed to stream television live without any legal obligations. If you want go to university after your A Levels, then it’s also legal if: “Your out-of-term address is covered by a TV License AND You only use TV receiving equipment that is powered solely by its own internal batteries AND You have not connected it to an aerial or plugged it into the mains.”

TV Catchup is totally different to just watching films online, as this is illegal, but TV catchup follows the same licensing rules as usually TV and you can be caught very easily.

‘A quirk of tv licence’s outdated legislation is that it only covers live broadcasts. That means for on-demand services such as the BBC iPlayer that show content after it’s appeared on live television, you don’t need a licence – a point made by the BBC in their guidelines for watching programmes on a mobile device.’ These TV streaming websites may be legal due to the fact they are not live TV, but controversy has arisen in the claims that ‘The success of the BBC's iPlayer is putting the internet under severe strain and threatening to bring the network to a halt, internet service providers claimed yesterday.’ They want the corporation to share the cost of upgrading the network — estimated at £831 million — to cope with the increased workload. Viewers are now watching more than one million BBC programmes online each week.

Nonetheless, TV streaming websites are popular as shown by the above statistic, and we can only estimate their popularity will grow. Perhaps in the future, media in the online age will now mean a TV is not a neccessity in the average household. According to a BBC article written last year, ‘Freesat viewers will be able to catch up with Christmas specials, including Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing, following a deal that will see the BBC Iplayer launched on the digital TV service next month.The service, a joint venture between the BBC and ITV, is also planning to launch ITV's catch-up TV service, the ITV Player, in the first half of 2010. Freesat will be the first free-to-air service to launch the ITV Player, allowing viewers to watch on-demand programming via their TV set rather than a computer.’

With increasing extension plans, we can only estimate that media in the online age has begun to make considerable changes to the way we live our lives. No longer will TV need to be watched at a certain time, or even on a television. ‘The Freesat iPlayer offering will provide 450 hours of BBC on-demand programming per week, including Top Gear, EastEnders, Life, Gavin and Stacey, and Christmas special The Gruffalo, for viewers to watch for up to seven days after the programmes have aired on TV. A full public launch is planned for early 2010.’

Feedback from Jenny our client

A very promising start – but across the board, some problems in the balance of information and opinion. You really need to start from thinking about the essential information your readers are going to need for the purposes of the exam (Matt and Tara start off very well in this respect) , and resource them factually and theoretically before you launch off into your own views.

To take just two examples, I think Natalie’s piece, which is very factual but well informed, gets this nearly right, although it could do with some references to theory; whereas Philippa’s article on Facebook is very lively and personal but needs much more factual research and detailed examples of Facebook use to support the arguments, and in particular to justify some of her remarks about Facebook ‘addiction’ - which does play a bit worryingly to the ‘moral panics’ often expressed about social networking. Similarly, James’ piece on Wikipedia needs a lot more data and theoretical references to support his personal views – and he needs to unpick his section about ‘How ‘true’ is Wikipedia’, in which he makes some fairly general assumptions. Across the range of the pieces, I think you’re covering interesting stuff and have got lots of good ideas, but often there’s too much padding and not enough planning to incorporate more critical and theoretical issues.

Have to rush, but will feed back more at the next draft. Do think about planning, though – sometimes its really helpful to incorporate web references and exampoles into your initial planning from the very start. The use of real-life examples, with weblinks and acknowledged quotes, is what will make these pieces really useful to readers.

Jenny seemed to like our one as its starting to relate to the media a2 exam alot, we just need to keep that flowing or it will not be usefull

Today we had a briefing about the rest of the project, how its going and what the whole class things we need to do to be able to get the newspaper done on time.

Once that was done I was given someone elses Article to check over and to give them some feedback as to where to do next. I then updated my overall plan with objectives of this week, which will be uploaded at the end of the project

Questions that need addressing

1) Article Title?

2) What is BBC iplayer? - As Jenny said, we have to assume that not everyone has heard of these, explain the background of them all.

3) You could explain how all of these sites have developed over time, what they started as, to where they are now.

4) Good work so far, where will the article develop?

5) Footnotes show a good amount of research has taken place.

Overall, I think that this is generally good feedback and that Mike has clearly liked the fact that we have used footnotes to show background research. More footnotes will be essential and I think this would really help to show evidence and levels of research.

Things to change

- The article will develop from the things we still need to include, and after
talking ideas through with Mike and Matt L, we have both decided some more
statistics, and people's opinions to use in the exam so students can back up
their points.

- It also needs a lot more content in terms of detail and analysis,
because this is only a rough draft so content will obviously add up over
time.

- Also, points about general applications such as BBC iplayer, 4oD and general
summaries of what these are to the student will also be helpful as we cannot
assume everyone knows what they are.

Today we did some class discussion as to where each of our article fit into the A2 perspective for our exam. we had 6 topics to see if our article could fit into each one, and put them in order, from most suited to least. we place each article on the board and we had a class discussion as to where we think each topic actually laid.

after that we got back into our groups and we were given the task by kirk to plan a flyer for this newspaper to advertise and try to get it to sell.

I am in the last testing process of a full PVR function for the site at the moment to include record, pause, rewind, we 'hope' to release a beta version within the month.

Looking at this, i could find some more information needed, talking about more stations, and adding some cable only stations for an extra subscription fee.

I really wanted to know the basic behind this site, but they couldn't release the information in case i was a competitor or someone read it as such.

Later they gave me a link to a thread post they made about needing a TV licence when viewing this, except for a few cases.

i simply tweeted "Was trying to think of a website for my project that has changed a media industry, then i thought of @Tvcatchup changed the way i watch tv!" On twitter mainly to show my teacher that i am doing work, and TV Catchup saw it and contacted me back!

I have been looking at different media web 2.0 websites in which an article may be interesting to write about for media in the online age, and i have decided to write about how TV has changed over the past few years with a new online web service to catchup on show, or even watch them live on the Internet. www.tvcatchup.com

I have been using a website called TV Catchup, which has over 30 channels on its website which you can stream(watch) live on the Internet for free. this is a new radical change to the way people watch TV, because this website has personally changed the way i view television programs. when i want to watch a program i usually used to have to stop whatever i was doing and go sit down just watching the TV. but now i can carry on with what i am doing ,and have the TV on a window in the background of my computer, which i can click on whenever i want to.
The service gets paid for by it having Ad's every time you want to watch a channel, including channel adverts also, so this is how this site can probably be passed as being legal.
Disadvantages is that this service is at a lower quality then your TV, so if you are looking for HD, you wont get it here, but for people on the go, who want to watch TV, they can simply use this on their laptop.

Not only does it offer a online service, it can be used on your IPhone or Itouch, to just quickly look at when you are on a journey or not near a TV (i watch it in the morning from my bed). which this means you can now get TV on your IPhone, which has made an IPhone even more useful then it was before!

I first discovered this website on my Ipod Touch before the internet first, because my mum was watching TV and i hated the program she was watching, so i typed into google, "TV live Streaming" and this was one of the first searches that came up.

This website has totally changed the way i watch TV, as i have it on pretty much every time I am using my computer, I even took a spear monitor on one of my older computers and pluged it into my main computer just to have the website on a screen all the time, so i can just glance at it while I am using the computer, I have it on right now! watching top gear!

I don't know how this can go into an article to help for the Media A2 exam, i will just have to see what the other members in the group say.

Today we were feeding back on things we were doing on Wednesday, as my puzzles were on the blog i didn't get chance to show what i did.

We also started to draft ideas we have initially on the board to other members of the group to see what we have for the edition.

Some of the ideas seemed good, but i don't think most of them are strong enough to even go into a magazine, so i think we are slowly falling behind.

I am also feeling that everyone is getting distracted very easily and don't really know what is going on, or what needs to be done by tomorrow, so i hope we get more organised to be able to move further with this project.

I found this website that could create crosswords ect, which could be useful for a little topical puzzle section for the "newspaper". I made up a quick one that doesn't really have much meaning about media, it was just a test:

This is a basic one i made, its got lame answers, but it can be used to do whatever questions, and you can have up to like 30 questions so it would be quite good to use.

I don't really know what other puzzles you can have in a media newspaper that can be topical, maybe a word search, but i don't know, i looked for one and here is what I found:

Using these websites are alot easyer then creating them yourself, and we have a limited time anyway, if we have to create them all ourselves then at least we will have a rough guide to creating our own providing it gets approved.

This website was setup to help people make their own newspapers. And by ‘newspapers’ they mean anything you can make with ink on newsprint.

Their basic product is a 12–page, tabloid–size newspaper in black and white or colour in quantities from 5 to 5000.

Once everyone chose who they thought would be good for what role, they were all given in to tally up to see who got the most of each, here is the final outcome:

I am a Gold Team member, which the team I am in could be quite good if everyone turns up, theres one that is hardly ever there, so it looks like it will just be three people for most of the project, but it gives me more to do and more ways to get involved.

In some ways i think this will work really well, but only if people update it, which at the moment looks like people will not do that as hardly anyone has tweeted yet.

Only person that is allowed to contact the client, which means gathering questions from other members of the team to ask her, saves the client having 16 emails asking the same thing.

Evidence:

This person needs to make sure that every bit of evidence is documented and recorded, from meetings to different stuff other members do.

Reflection:

Making sure that everyone is keeping a record of what they are doing and pointing people in the right way to gain the most marks possible

Schedule:

Making sure that everything is flowing and getting done on time, it's this persons job to see that all the deadlines are met

This is our brief for our project, bascially it means we need to make a newspaper or a little magazine thing to help people with their A2 Media exams, so we need topical articles about the exam to help them pass, so basicly its like a revision pack, which if we made it interesting could be really helpful with passing exams.
I hope we don't just have loads of boring articles in it, we also need interesting stuff they sterotypically have in newspapers like comics and puzzles, but i think they do need to be topical to the Media exam slightly also.

I don't really mind if i don't get a big role, as most people probably wont pick me anyway, but it would be nice to get involved with the major stuff with the project but i doubt that will happen, thats one of the reasons why i didn't give myself a big role. I hope some people don't get some of the major roles as the work just wont get done.
